System and method for securing machine-to-machine communications

This invention describes a way to secure communications between smart devices (M2M devices) and applications that want to use them. When an application needs to talk to a device, it first requests security credentials from a central authorization server. This server then generates and sends back credentials, including an access token, which the application uses to establish a secure, encrypted connection with the device. The process specifically involves the application generating unique session data and cryptographic data for the access token.

Why it matters: Filed before the widespread adoption of cloud-native identity and access management (IAM) for IoT. The infrastructure for a centralized M2M authorization server is now readily available and scalable, simplifying deployment of such a system.
