Hybrid power line/wireless appliance automation system, device, and power monitoring method utilizing the same

This invention describes a system for automating home appliances using special devices that plug into your existing electrical outlets. These devices can talk to each other and a central control unit using both the electrical wiring (power line communication) and wireless signals. They can store information and, based on instructions from the central unit, decide whether to keep power flowing to a connected appliance or turn it off, all without needing to install new data cables.

Why it matters: Filed before the widespread availability of low-cost, integrated Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Zigbee modules and mature power line communication standards like G.hn. Building a robust hybrid communication system is now significantly cheaper and more reliable.
