Predictive reasoning for controlling speed of a vehicle

This invention describes a system for an autonomous vehicle to adjust its speed. It works by first detecting a vehicle in front of it and then identifying a traffic control object, like a traffic light or stop sign, further ahead of that leading vehicle. The system then determines the current and predicted status of this traffic control object to decide how the autonomous vehicle should change its speed.

Why it matters: Since 2015, AI and sensor fusion for autonomous vehicles have advanced significantly, making real-time prediction of traffic control object states much more robust. This enables more sophisticated and safer predictive speed adjustments than previously feasible.
