System and methods for monitoring leaf temperature for prediction of plant water status

This invention describes a device that monitors plant leaves to figure out how much water a plant needs. It uses a set of sensors, including one for leaf temperature, air temperature, relative humidity, and ambient light, all mounted on a platform near the leaf. More advanced versions of the device also include a wind barrier and wind speed sensors to precisely measure and account for wind's effect on the leaf.

Why it matters: Since 2014, the cost and power efficiency of environmental sensors and microcontrollers have dramatically improved. This makes deploying a network of sophisticated, battery-powered leaf monitoring platforms more economically viable and practical for precision agriculture.
