Tracking of and communication with mobile terminals using a battery-powered wireless network infrastructure

This invention describes a way for wireless networks to save power, especially useful for tracking things. Fixed base stations, powered by batteries or energy harvesting, mostly stay asleep. They wake up briefly to announce their presence and when they'll be listening, then go back to sleep, allowing mobile devices to communicate only when the base stations are active, thereby conserving their limited power.

Why it matters: Filed before the widespread adoption of low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs) and the Internet of Things. Modern low-power microcontrollers and energy harvesting make building such a power-efficient tracking network significantly more feasible and relevant.
