Distributed airborne wireless networks

This invention describes a wireless communication system that uses a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying together. Each UAV carries a part of the communication equipment, like antennas for talking to users on the ground and links for talking to other UAVs in the fleet. This allows the system to provide communication services from the sky by coordinating the flight of the UAVs and distributing the necessary hardware among them.

Why it matters: Filed before widespread drone swarm capabilities. Coordinated UAV flight control and miniaturized communication hardware are now more mature.
