System and method for testing crash avoidance technologies

This invention describes a system for testing vehicle crash avoidance technologies. It uses a special target vehicle, called a Dynamic Motion Element (DME), which is designed to look like a car and has tapered sides so it can be safely run over. This DME moves in a precisely coordinated way with a subject vehicle, constantly adjusting its speed and position based on the subject vehicle's movement to simulate various crash scenarios for testing purposes. The claims specify that the system uses speed sensors on both vehicles and trajectory files to calculate and modulate the DME's speed in real-time.

Why it matters: ADAS and autonomous vehicle development has exploded since 2013, increasing the demand for sophisticated, realistic testing systems. The underlying sensor, processing, and real-time control technologies required for such a system have also matured significantly.
