Ontology-based system and method for industrial control

This invention describes a smart way to manage factory production. When a customer order comes in, a computer system translates it into a detailed, structured request using a special knowledge map (an "order ontology"). Then, a software "agent" uses this structured request, along with a library of general production methods and information about what machines can do, to create a specific, step-by-step production plan for the factory. This plan is also structured using another knowledge map (a "production plan ontology") to guide the manufacturing process.

Why it matters: Filed before the widespread adoption of Industry 4.0 and advanced AI for planning. Modern knowledge graph technologies and AI-driven reasoning engines could significantly simplify the development and enhance the intelligence of the ontology and agent components.
