Energy efficient and insulated building envelopes

This invention describes a special building material designed to make walls more energy efficient. It combines a sheet that lets moisture escape from inside a building but stops liquid water and air from getting in, similar to a modern house wrap. This sheet is directly attached to a solid block of aerogel, a super lightweight and insulating material.

Why it matters: Filed when aerogel was prohibitively expensive and difficult to manufacture for building applications. Advances in aerogel production and cost-efficiency since 2005 make this combination more feasible.
