SAN simulator

This invention describes a software system that creates a virtual Storage Area Network (SAN) for testing and management purposes. It generates virtual SAN devices that simulate the presence and behavior of real hardware without needing any physical equipment. A SAN management system can then interact with this virtual SAN to perform various tasks in a safe, simulated environment, configured by a file detailing the desired virtual devices.

Why it matters: Filed before widespread cloud computing and software-defined infrastructure, the ability to create and manage complex virtual networks has vastly improved since 2002. Modern virtualization technologies make building and deploying such a simulator for testing and training far more feasible and valuable today.
