Printing of radiation curable inks into a radiation curable liquid layer

This invention describes a printing method where an image is created by first applying a uniform layer of a clear, radiation-curable liquid onto a surface. Then, tiny droplets of radiation-curable ink are jetted directly into this liquid layer. Once the ink droplets are embedded, the entire liquid layer, now containing the ink, is exposed to radiation to harden and form the final image. The sharpness of the printed image can be controlled by precisely adjusting the thickness of the initial liquid layer to match the size of the ink droplets.

Why it matters: Filed before efficient UV LED curing and advanced micro-fluidic ink-jet systems. These now simplify precise layer application and rapid curing.
