Multiple-view processing in wide-angle video camera

This invention describes a video camera that captures a very wide view, almost a full hemisphere, using a high-resolution sensor. Instead of physically moving the camera or its lens, the camera uses a computer chip to digitally zoom in, pan, and tilt within that wide image, correcting for any distortions. The camera is also designed to compress and format the selected view for sending it elsewhere.

Why it matters: Filed when high-resolution sensors and real-time image processing were expensive and specialized. Today, powerful embedded processors and affordable high-resolution sensors make this approach practical and cost-effective.
