Device-Assisted Services for Protecting Network Capacity

A wireless mobile device, such as a smartphone, is designed to intelligently manage how its applications use network data. It categorizes apps, for example, as actively used (foreground) or running in the background, and applies different rules for data usage based on these classifications and the app's behavior. For instance, it might allow an email app to use data immediately if it's in the foreground, but defer data for a background music app until a more opportune moment.
