This invention describes a computer program that creates virtual 3D models of a workpiece and the smaller pieces, called flitches, that will be cut from it. It uses the original workpiece's 3D model and a planned cutting solution to predict the exact shape of the flitches before they are physically cut. Specifically, the program determines the outer contours of these predicted flitches at various elevations.
Why it matters: Filed before widespread integration of AI in design software. Advances in generative AI and computational geometry since 2023 could now significantly enhance the accuracy and speed of predicting cut outcomes.
