Methods and apparatus for implementing and/or using a camera device

This invention describes a way to make cameras much thinner than usual, especially for small devices like phones. It achieves this by using a mirror inside the camera to bend the light path, allowing for a longer lens system to fit into a shallow space. The lenses themselves might have unusual, non-circular shapes to fit the design. Some versions of this camera could even use multiple such thin lens systems, pointing in different directions, to capture several images that are then stitched together into one complete picture.

Why it matters: Filed before computational photography for multi-camera systems was mature. The market for ultra-thin devices with advanced cameras has also intensified, making folded optics more relevant.
