Systems and methods for laser and imaging odometry for autonomous robots

This invention describes a way for a robot to figure out how its camera has moved. It does this by taking two pictures at slightly different times, then digitally shifting and rotating the second picture until it perfectly matches the first. The amount of shifting and rotating needed tells the robot exactly how its camera, and thus the robot itself, has changed position and orientation, specifically by matching 3D point cloud representations of the images.
