Semantic map with live updates

This invention describes a system for keeping maps up-to-date for self-driving cars. It works by only sending small, relevant map sections to the car. When a map update arrives, the system identifies any parts that conflict with the car's current map section and specifically delays applying those inconsistent updates until the self-driving car is no longer actively using that particular map area.

Why it matters: Filed in 2023, the fundamental challenge of safely managing inconsistent map updates for autonomous vehicles in real-time remains complex. While AV technology progresses, the specific hurdles of implementing this delayed, inconsistency-aware update strategy within a safety-critical system likely persist, making robust deployment difficult.
