Catalysts and processes for the direct production of liquid fuels from carbon dioxide and hydrogen

This invention describes a process to convert carbon dioxide and hydrogen into syngas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. It uses two different catalysts in sequence. First, hydrogen and carbon dioxide are fed into a reactor with a specific metal-alumina spinel catalyst to produce syngas, and then a second catalyst further processes the remaining carbon dioxide in that syngas to create even more syngas.

Why it matters: Filed before significant advancements in green hydrogen production via electrolysis. The increasing availability and decreasing cost of sustainable hydrogen could make this CO2 conversion process more economically attractive now.
