Guided munition systems for detecting off-axis targets

This invention describes a guided missile that can search for targets in two phases. Initially, it flies a straight or arced path, looking for targets directly ahead using a fixed sensor with a narrow field of view. If no targets are found, the missile changes to a more complex search pattern, such as a U-shape, corkscrew, or spiral, to find targets located to the side of its initial path. Once an off-axis target is detected, the missile adjusts its course to intercept it, potentially using a signal to illuminate the target.
