Sensor-integrated neural network

A sensor system that uses light or radar waves to scan an environment. It then employs a specialized optical computer, called an optical neural network, to analyze the reflections. This optical computer generates signals whose properties directly represent physical characteristics of the environment, which are then measured by a detector to create data about the surroundings.

Why it matters: Since 2019, advancements in integrated photonics and optical component fabrication have made building compact and efficient optical neural network hardware more feasible, potentially improving the performance and practicality of such a sensor system.
