Real-time online calibration of coherent doppler lidar systems on vehicles

This invention describes a method for ensuring a lidar system mounted on a vehicle is accurately calibrated. It compares the Doppler shifts measured by the lidar for various targets with what those shifts should theoretically be, based on the vehicle's known location and orientation. If there's a discrepancy, the system calculates and applies corrections to the lidar's stored position and rotation values, particularly useful after its initial installation on the vehicle.

Why it matters: Filed before the widespread deployment of advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous vehicles. The increasing demand for robust, real-time sensor fusion and the improved computational capabilities in vehicles make online lidar calibration more critical and feasible now.
