Autonomous control of heavy equipment and vehicles using task hierarchies

This invention describes a system for making heavy equipment and vehicles drive themselves. It works by taking a big job and breaking it down into smaller, pre-defined steps based on a pre-existing map of tasks and subtasks. The system then uses sensor data to understand what's happening around the vehicle and its current situation. Based on this, it selects a specific predictive model to forecast what might happen next and uses that information to control the vehicle's actions for each small step.

Why it matters: Filed before the widespread application of advanced AI for dynamic task planning and real-time model adaptation. The claims' reliance on premapping and a library of predictive models could now be augmented by more flexible AI systems capable of generating or adapting models on the fly.
