Automated test case generation for deep neural networks and other model-based artificial intelligence systems

This invention describes a way to automatically create tests for artificial intelligence systems, particularly deep neural networks. It works by running an initial test, then using a special AI explainer (like LIME) to understand why the AI made a certain decision. From this understanding, it figures out what other tests would be useful to explore different behaviors, and then generates those new tests, repeating the process until a comprehensive set of tests is built.

Why it matters: Filed as AI models were growing in complexity, the intervening years have seen an explosion in large, opaque models like LLMs. This makes the need for automated, explainability-driven testing even more critical, and the underlying AI explainer and constraint solving technologies have matured.
