Vehicle-sourced infrastructure quality metrics

This invention describes a system where a central computer collects information about roads and other infrastructure from many different vehicles. Each vehicle has sensors that gather data about nearby infrastructure articles, like signs or road surfaces. The computer then combines all this data for a specific infrastructure article to figure out how good its quality is, and then takes some action based on that quality assessment.

Why it matters: Filed in 2018, this predates the widespread integration of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) sensors in consumer vehicles. The proliferation of these sensors and significant advancements in AI/ML for object detection and data fusion now make collecting and processing infrastructure data from a fleet of vehicles far more feasible and accurate.
