Systems and methods for mitigating effects of high-reflectivity objects in LiDAR data

This invention describes a system that improves the quality of data from a LiDAR device, especially when shiny objects like mirrors or highly reflective surfaces are present. When the LiDAR detects such an object obscuring its view, it changes its scanning behavior by adjusting the light beam's intensity and dynamically controlling its detector. Specifically, it can selectively turn off parts of the detector based on the object's distance and adjust its scan direction to avoid glare. This allows the LiDAR to acquire a second, clearer scan that omits the reflective object, which is then combined with the initial scan to create a better overall picture of the environment.

Why it matters: LiDAR hardware and software control systems have matured significantly since 2018, making dynamic adjustments like pixel time-gating more feasible. This addresses a persistent challenge in autonomous navigation and mapping applications.
