Killing asymmetric resistive processing units for neural network training

This invention describes a technique to improve the reliability of specialized computer chips called resistive processing unit (RPU) arrays, which are designed to train neural networks more efficiently. Before training begins, the system identifies individual processing units within the array that are behaving inconsistently or "asymmetrically." It then permanently disables these faulty units by applying a high electrical voltage, effectively "burning" them out, so that only the reliable units are used for training.

Why it matters: Filed before the widespread adoption of large neural networks highlighted the urgent need for specialized, efficient AI hardware. The ongoing challenge of manufacturing reliable analog computing units makes methods to improve RPU array consistency more critical for scaling these technologies today.
