Rule-based natural language processing

This invention describes a computer system designed to understand natural language. It works by taking what you say or type, identifying specific patterns in it, and then checking if those patterns match any predefined "intentions" it knows about. If it finds a match, the system performs a specific task associated with that intention and tells you if it succeeded, specifically using a rule-based approach.

Why it matters: Filed before large language models became prevalent. While LLMs offer broad capabilities, the explicit, deterministic nature of rule-based systems described here may now be valued for specific, high-precision applications or for explainability, where LLMs can be opaque.
