Companion robot for personal interaction

This invention describes a way for a person to set up a mobile robot's navigation in their home. Using a remote device, the person views video from the robot as it explores, then defines and combines room areas on a map before the robot assigns its own labels. The person can also select an object on this map, and the robot will then move to that object's location.

Why it matters: Since 2018, consumer-grade robot navigation and mapping technologies, including SLAM and object recognition, have matured significantly. This makes the remote setup and object-targeting described in the claims more reliable and user-friendly to implement today.
