Robot implemented item manipulation

This invention describes a robot system designed to pick up and move items. If the robot's vision system can't figure out how to pick a specific item, it asks a human for help. The human then sends back an instruction, which could be telling the robot exactly where on the item to grasp, what tool to use, or where to put it, and the robot then follows that instruction for picking and placing.

Why it matters: Filed in 2016, this invention predates the significant advancements in deep learning and AI for machine vision. By 2026, object recognition and scene understanding are far more robust, making the robot's initial analysis more capable and the interpretation of human visual instructions much more effective.
