In-situ system and method of determining coating integrity of turbomachinery components

This invention describes a way to check the protective coating on parts inside a turbomachine without taking them out. It works by briefly heating a small area of the part with a heating element and then using an optical sensor, positioned very close to the surface, to measure how the coating reacts. A computer then analyzes this reaction to see if the coating is still good, adjusting the heating time based on the coating material.

Why it matters: The filing predates significant advancements in compact, high-resolution optical and infrared sensors, which are crucial for the specified close-proximity, in-situ measurements. The processing power for real-time comparison of sensor outputs has also become far more accessible and efficient.
